Reasons to study Applied Human Biology
Further your understanding of Biology by learning more about humans: from conception through aging, in sickness and in health. You’ll cover topics such as genetics, cell biology, organ systems, immunology as well as learning practical microbiological and healthcare diagnostic techniques. This course is suitable for those interested in a career in healthcare science, biomedicine and microbiological research as well as allied professions such as paramedicine and nursing. -You will learn more about the intricacies of the human body and its workings -You are interested in medical professions such as nursing, midwifery, paramedicine, and physiotherapy.
What you will study
You will learn about the structure, function and disorders of the major organ systems, complete a practical Microbiology unit, discover how public health initiatives use the media to inform and educate us on how to keep healthy, and complete one optional coursework unit (choices include Human Regulation and Reproduction, Genetics and Genetic Engineering or Biomedical Science).
Entry Criteria
Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Science, English and Maths
How you will be assessed
A mixture of coursework and exams 50% weighting for each one
Priestley extra
Students visit the Medical Laboratories at Whiston Hospital to learn more about the work of Biomedical Scientists and how they support the diagnostic and therapeutic work of the medical profession.

Progression
This course will allow progression into allied medical professions such as nursing, midwifery, paramedicine, physiotherapy, as well as further study of the sciences at degree or apprenticeship level.
