Reasons to study Geography
To develop a range of essential skills for Higher Education and the world of work.
You will study interesting content, which is relevant to any citizen in the 21st century.
Through exciting topics, learners will understand the nature of physical and human geography whilst unpicking the debates surrounding the contemporary challenges facing the world today.
You will develop analytical and note taking skills including fieldwork study visits.
What you will study
Year 1 (AS) – Physical Geography including Tectonic processes, Glaciated Landscapes and a one-day fieldwork trip to the Lake District. Human Geography including Globalisation, Regenerating places and a fieldwork to Liverpool city centre.
Year 2 (A-Level) – Water Cycle and Water insecurity, Carbon cycle and energy security, Climate Change Futures as well as Human Systems and Geopolitics covering Superpowers, Health, Human Rights and Intervention.
Entry Criteria
interest in Geography, demonstrated by knowledge and appreciation of features of the natural and built landscape and human behaviour in this geographical setting
GCSE grade 5 in Geography and Maths as well as level 4 in English
willingness and desire to get out in the field to gather data – whatever the weather!
How you will be assessed
Year 1 (AS) – two exams each including a fieldwork question
Year 2 (A-Level) – three exams worth 80% and an independent investigation worth 20%
Priestley extra
As well as compulsory field trips to places such as the Lake District, recent educational visits have included Iceland and Sicily, with the chance to climb active volcanoes. Guest speakers including Priestley alumni and visits to universities.
